Advanced mammography technology to improve breast cancer treatment at MNH
Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment are expected to improve at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), as clinicians at the national referral hospital expect to receive the latest mammography technology and advanced imaging training under a project to lower Tanzania’s breast cancer mortality by 50 per cent.
The project follows a collaboration announced Thursday between the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and GE HealthCare, an American medical company. The collaboration will involve providing mammography technology, training, and educational tools to radiologists at the MNH, which did not have a working mammography machine.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer mortality in Tanzania, with more than 80 per cent of diagnoses happening at stage III or IV when the odds of long-term survivability are much lower.

Welcome to the Digital Freedom and Innovation Day By The Chanzo on April 20, 2024
In enhancing conversation on the issues that are of public interest, The Chanzo will host Freedom and Innovation Day By The Chanzo on April 20, 2024, at National Museum Major Theatre, Dar es Salaam.
Over 400 participants including opinion leaders, innovators, and changemakers from Tanzania’s tech, creative, civic, and artistic communities are expected to participate in the dialogue whose main goal is to celebrate triumphs made, remaining challenges, and imagining a better tomorrow where people are freer to innovate, create, and express their ideas.
The event will include dialogue on three themes: The first theme will be Tanzania’s Digital Future: Ready or Not? Examining tech development through experiences from Tanzania, Africa, and beyond; the second theme, Digital Media and the future of journalism in Tanzania.
The third theme will be Digital platforms as a medium for public discourse: From elections and civic engagement to online misinformation and disinformation. There will also be a mock-up presentation of ‘elevator pitch’ of innovative ideas.
This conversation of the intersection of freedom and innovation in an era of digital technologies is of importance as Tanzania has made significant progress in internet access to the majority of the population. To date, over 35 million Tanzanians have access to the internet.
This development has enabled millions of Tanzanians to utilize digital platforms for the purpose of income generation, creativity, driving political dialogues, learning new skills, and building e-community.
Nevertheless, this development has come with some risks including fraud, cybercrimes, cyberbullying, and harassment, repressive laws, and limited skills among Tanzanians on recent emerging technologies such as AI.
The Chanzo believes that the dialogues it organizes on issues of high public interest will contribute positively to efforts by other actors who work tirelessly to ensure the improvement of the welfare of Tanzania and world societies..
The event will be streamed live on The Chanzo YouTube Channel and social media pages (Twitter, WhatsApp channel) from 09:20-13:30 EAT.
