What you need to know about the 18-08 Ngorongoro Maasai Demonstrations in Tanzania

On Sunday, August 18, 2024, hundreds of Maasai community members—men, women, and children—gathered to protest the denial of basic rights, discrimination, and the loss of their ancestral land in Ngorongoro, Tanzania.

Draped in their traditional red clothing and holding leaves a symbol of peace recognized across many Tanzanian tribes the demonstrators blocked the busy Ngorongoro-Serengeti Road. They carried posters, prayed, and marched, singing in the Maasai language to voice their grievances.

The protest is the latest in a series of actions against a government relocation plan aimed at moving 110,000 Maasai from Ngorongoro to Msomera, Sauni, and Kitwai—over 300 kilometers from their current homes.

The government argues that the relocation is essential to preserve the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site. While officials maintain the relocation is voluntary, they have hinted at future legislation that would prohibit any residents from remaining in Ngorongoro.

ACT-Wazalendo: Local government election will be the ultimate test of Samia’s 4Rs

The Deputy Chairperson of ACT-Wazalendo for Mainland Tanzania, Isihaka Mchinjita, addressed the public during a rally in Tanga on Saturday, August 17, 2024, stating that the upcoming local government election will be the final test for President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s philosophy of the 4Rs (Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms, and Rebuilding).

Mchinjita made these remarks while concluding a tour of 22 regions by ACT-Wazalendo national leaders, which was recently launched as part of a campaign to register ten million party members within ten months.

President Samia introduced the 4Rs philosophy when Tanzania marked 30 years since the reintroduction of multiparty politics, one year into her presidency, with the aim of achieving political reforms and building an inclusive democracy.

2025 Election, Is It Going to be Samia Vs Lissu?

Opposition party CHADEMA, Vice Chairperson Tundu Lissu, has announced that he has informed his party about his intention to run for the presidency of the United Republic of Tanzania through his party.

“Let me just say that I have indicated my intention as a presidential aspirant through my party officially,” Lissu explained in a special interview on August 16, 2024, with the Sauti ya Watanzania, an online activism network that organizes various conversations on Club House.

“When I say an official aspirant, I mean that I have already given notice to the Secretary General of my party that I intend to run for president next year, as our Constitution and regulations require,” Lissu added.
