CHADEMA, ACT Wazalendo Delegations Reportedly Blocked From Entering Angola to Attend a Democracy Summit
Opposition parties CHADEMA and ACT Wazalendo said Thursday that Angolan authorities reportedly blocked their respective delegations from entering the southern African nation where Tanzanian opposition leaders were attending a conference on democracy.
The Tanzanian opposition leaders went to Angola ostensibly on the invitation from the Brenthurst Foundation, a South Africa-based NGO that works to promote democracy and good governance in Africa, to attend the Platform for African Democrats (PAD) Forum, scheduled to take place from March 15 to March 16, 2025.
The ACT Wazalendo delegation included party leader Dorothy Semu as well as the party’s national chairperson Othman Masoud Othman, who doubles as the First Vice President in the ruling Government of National Unity in Zanzibar. CHADEMA was to be represented by its national chairperson, Tundu Lissu.
However, the two delegations were stopped at the Luanda Airport from entering Angola, with ACT Wazalendo reporting that no specific reasons were provided for such an inconvenience.
“The leaders are currently being held at the Luanda Airport, and their passports have been confiscated,” the party said in a statement posted on its official X account.

Tanzania Declares End of Marburg Virus Disease in Kagera
Minister of Health, Jenista Mhagma, announced Thursday that Tanzania is now officially free from Marburg virus disease outbreak after recording no new cases over 42 days since the death of the last confirmed case on January 28, 2025.
The outbreak, in which two confirmed and eight probable cases were recorded – all deceased –, was the second the country has experienced. Both this outbreak, which was declared on January 20, 2025, and the one in 2023 occurred in the north-eastern Kagera region.
“Since the declaration of the outbreak, the government, in close collaboration with partners, implemented several initiatives to prevent the outbreak from spreading across the Biharamulo district [of Kagera],” Mhagama said in a statement. “We’re happy today to announce that those efforts paid off.”
The efforts include setting up coordination and response systems, with support partners, chiefly the World Health Organization (WHO), at the national and regional levels.

Govt, Unemployed Teachers’ Organisation Agree on Way Forward to Resolve Raised Grievances
The government has given itself about a month to look at grievances the unemployed teachers in Tanzania, under their umbrella body, the Non-Employed Teachers Organisation (NETO), have raised, urging for authorities to intervene to improve their life and welfare.
During a meeting between NETO leaders and the ministries responsible for public service and education on Wednesday, the government committed itself to forming a team of experts from five government ministries that will critically examine the issues NETO has raised for about 40 days before it comes up with proposed interventions.
Minister of State in the President’s Office for Public Service Management and Good Governance, Mr George Simbachawene, said the team of experts will draw its members from his ministry, as well as ministries responsible for education, finance, as well as planning and investment, who are required to advise the govermment on the best ways it can handle the issues that NETO and its leaders have raised.
NETO claims to represent all teachers who graduated across Tanzania between 2015 and 2023, who have been unemployed, and who want the government to take some measures that they think would end the “mass unemployment crisis” of teachers in the country.
