The Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania on Monday, May 4, 2026, elected three representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) to fill vacant seats left open after previous members became ineligible under the East African Community protocol.

Announcing the results after the vote, Parliamentary Clerk Baraka Leonard declared Fatuma Abdallah Kange the winner in the women’s category. She secured 223 “yes” votes against 70 “no” votes out of 293 Members of Parliament who participated in the ballot.

In the men’s category, former MP and Deputy Minister Cosato David Chumi won overwhelmingly with 289 “yes” votes and only 4 “no” votes. He was elected alongside Kambarage Masato Wasira, the son of veteran politician and Vice Chairman of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (Mainland Tanzania), Stephen Masato Wasira, who also secured a decisive victory with 284 “yes” votes and 9 “no” votes.

Those who vacated the seats include Angela Kizigha, who was appointed as a Member of Parliament by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, as well as Ngwaru Maghembe and James Milya, who assumed ministerial roles following the 2025 general election.

Speaking after the announcement, Speaker of Parliament Mussa Zungu urged the newly elected MPs to prioritize the broader interests of the East African Community.

“Go and safeguard the collective interests of the union,” said Zungu, “Oversee trade activities—our Community has a GDP of about USD 440 million. If we strengthen our unity, that GDP will grow and our citizens will benefit.”
