The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and Denmark have agreed to continue their cooperation on a program aimed at enhancing the efficiency of tax administration in Tanzania.
Speaking in Nairobi at a side event during the 50th Meeting of the Board of Governors of the African Development Fund, Danish Minister of Taxation Jeppe Bruus and Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of Tanzania, Amina Khamis Shaabani, announced that the two countries will extend their collaboration across various areas to further the program’s goals.
“We have agreed to bring together experts from Tanzania and Denmark through their embassy to assess and look into all key areas that need improvements in implementing this program,” said Ms. Amina.
Ms. Amina said the improvements in the tax system will help increase efficiency in government revenue collection through Tanzania Revenue Authority(TRA), which is under the Ministry of Finance.
Denmark has been supporting Tanzania in the modernization of the tax system by providing basket funding to the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and technical assistance to facilitate capacity development within areas of ICT.
The Danish Minister of Taxation, Mr. Jeppe Bruus, said that the Danish Ministry of Taxation will continue to provide technical assistance to the Government of Tanzania to ensure the improvement of various tax programs and to strengthen professional cooperation between the two countries.
“The Danish Government, through the Ministry of Taxation, recognizes the importance of the existing cooperation between these two countries; hence it is important to continue this cooperation, especially by providing expertise in tax matters,” said Mr. Bruus.
Tanzania and Denmark have a long history of cooperation in the development sector since the early 1960s during the administration of the first government under the late Father of the Nation, Julius Kambarage Nyerere.
Recently Tanzania has been taking several measure to improve its tax system, this include the introduction of the more effective electronic tax system, recruitment of workforce, training to its staff.
