Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, is in Apia, the capital city of Samoa, representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
Themed “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Common Wealth,” the meeting commenced on October 21 and is expected to conclude on October 26, 2024. Key agenda items include the election of the Commonwealth Secretary-General and discussions on investment, sustainable development, climate change, gender equality, economic resilience, democracy, and peace.
Commonwealth leaders typically meet every two years for CHOGM, with the venue rotating among member states. This year marks the first time the meeting is being held in a Pacific Small Island Developing State.
As one of the 56 Commonwealth members, Tanzania aims to leverage this meeting to engage in discussions that will benefit the country in areas such as investment, climate action, sustainable economic growth, and knowledge exchange.
While in Apia, Minister Kombo has already held discussions with several leaders, including the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Hon. Gaston Browne, and Seychelles’ Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Hon. Sylvester Radegonde, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations with their countries.
