Tanzania and Angola Sign Agreements on Defense, Investment, and Trade

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her host, President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola, held bilateral talks followed by a joint press conference today, April 8, 2025. In addition to the high-level discussions, President Samia, who is scheduled to conclude her visit tomorrow, also addressed the Parliament of Angola, highlighting the brotherly ties between the two nations.

“Friendship is important, but it is especially important when it also helps to consolidate economic cooperation ties because the liberation struggle phase ended a long time ago, decades ago,” President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenco said during a press briefer with President Samia.

He continued: “Today, our mission as heads of state is to ensure the economic and social development of our countries. Therefore, we are in a different kind of struggle, and since in this world no one is alone, no one develops without engaging with other states, with other countries, we will, starting from today’s visit, seek to accelerate efforts to further deepen the economic cooperation ties between Angola and the United Republic of Tanzania.”

The two countries went on and signed MOUs of cooperation between investment agencies and have agreed to strengthen cooperation and exchange of knowledge and shared experience in other important sectors, including the minerals, oil, and gas sectors. It was noted that the two countries also signed an MOU for cooperation of the defense forces of the two countries.

CHADEMA Appeals to the International Community As It Pushes for Reforms Ahead of Tanzania’s 2025 Elections

The opposition party CHADEMA has appealed to the international community for “moral and material support” in its campaign for key political and electoral reforms in Tanzania, ahead of the country’s 2025 general elections, which it has vowed to block if no reforms are implemented by then.

The opposition party is currently collecting signatures from Tanzanians for a petition it plans to present to international human rights organisations. The petition supports CHADEMA’s clarion call for systemic legal and regulatory reforms to ensure free and fair elections, under its ‘No Reforms, No Elections’ campaign.

In an exclusive interview with The Chanzo, the party’s Secretary for Foreign Affairs, John Kitoka, revealed that CHADEMA’s campaign specifically targets multilateral organizations – particularly major democracy and development stakeholders like the European Union – among others.

“We are also focusing on partner countries, those that support constitutional, political, and democratic reforms, as well as human rights—stakeholders who advocate for free elections,” Mr Kitoka said during the interview.

CHADEMA has already started to engage with some of these partners, as seen in their March 21, 2025, meeting with Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S Embassy, Dar es Salaam, Andrew Lentz, to “discuss the importance of free, fair, and peaceful electoral processes to the continued economic, social, and political development of Tanzania.”

Government Urges Women to Join Economic Empowerment Platforms

The Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Dr. Dorothy Gwajima, has called on women to join platforms for women’s economic empowerment in order to better understand the available economic opportunities in the country.

Dr. Gwajima made this statement in Dar es Salaam while receiving 1,000 copies of the Guide for Establishing and Launching Women’s Economic Empowerment Platforms from the Tanzania Commercial Bank (TCB).

She also officially introduced the National Committee tasked with coordinating awareness and education efforts to encourage women to join these platforms.

She explained that through the campaign titled “Inuka – Imarika – Tusua Kiuchumi” (Rise – Strengthen – Empower Economically), the newly introduced committee will be responsible for coordinating all relevant stakeholders to participate in this ongoing effort to raise awareness and educate women about the benefits of joining economic empowerment platforms.

“I call on all development partners to collaborate with this committee, which I have officially launched today, April 8, 2025, so that it can carry out its duties effectively,” said Dr. Gwajima.

She also thanked TCB for their commitment to printing 1,000 copies of the guide, whose distribution will officially begin alongside the awareness and education campaign, reaching all levels—including wards, villages, and neighborhoods.

“These copies will be a vital tool in encouraging women to join economic empowerment platforms,” Dr. Gwajima emphasized.
