More than 20 ministers and representatives from various African countries are in Dar es Salaam to attend the eLearning Africa Annual Conference and Exhibition, taking place over three days from May 7 to 9, 2025, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC).

Speaking at the event, Tanzania’s Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Adolf Mkenda, said this 18th International Conference & Exhibition on Digital Education, Training & Skills Development brings together diverse stakeholders with the goal of exchanging ideas and experiences on how digital systems are being used in education and advancing digital development.

“On one hand, we are using e-learning for teaching, and on the other, we are using this technology to develop various products that address the challenges we face,” said Prof. Mkenda.

This is the second time the conference is being held in Tanzania. It is organized by eLearning Africa and Tanzania’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Speaking about Tanzania’s efforts, Minister Mkenda said the Tanzanian government, in collaboration with various stakeholders, is implementing several initiatives to ensure digital technology is widely used in teaching across the country.

“We are already making significant use of e-learning in the country, though it has not yet been fully scaled. However, we have various initiatives underway through the Tanzania Institute of Education and various NGOs to reach as many schools as possible,” he added.

He also mentioned that, in addition to the Government’s efforts under the Sixth phase administration to distribute tablets to teachers and build digital infrastructure in some schools and training centers, the Ministry of Education has allocated funds in this year’s budget through the Samia Scholarship to support between 50 and 100 scholarship recipients. These students will attend a boot camp before joining foreign universities to study technology-related fields, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI).
