Court Stops Tanzania’s Main Opposition Party, CHADEMA, Activities for an Unknown Period Pending a Court Petition
The High Court, under Judge Hamidu Mwanga, has suspended all activities of Tanzania’s main opposition party, CHADEMA, and barred it from using its assets and properties, following complaints from Zanzibar-based CHADEMA members.
The order follows an application for an injunction by three applicants: Said Issa Mohamed, who served as CHADEMA’s Vice Chairperson from 2010 until January 2025 when the new leadership was elected; Ahmed Rashid, a member of CHADEMA’s Board of Trustees; and Maulidah Anna Komu, a former Vice Chairperson of the CHADEMA Board of Trustees.
The applicants argued that there is unequal allocation of the party’s resources, funds, and assets between Zanzibar and Tanganyika—the two entities that form the United Republic of Tanzania. They also claimed that members from Zanzibar are not provided equal opportunities within the party, and that there is discrimination based on religion, gender, and residency.
Following the petition, registered under Civil Cause Number 8323 of 2025, the applicants requested the court to temporarily suspend party activities while the main case is being heard—a request that was granted on June 10, 2025. The court ordered:
“That the respondents, the Registered Trustees of Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) and the General Secretary—Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), are restrained or prevented from organising and/or participating in any and/or all political activities pending the determination of the petition,” the court judgement reads.

Tanzania’s Public Institutions Deliver Record TSh 1 Trillion Dividend to Government
A total of 213 public institutions and enterprises have paid dividends amounting to Tanzanian Shillings (TSh) 1.028 trillion to the Government as of June 9 in the current financial year ending June 30, 2025. This represents a 68% increase compared to the dividends paid in the previous financial year.
Speaking at the dividend handover ceremony held at State House in Dar es Salaam on June 10, 2025, and attended by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Treasury Registrar Nehemia Mchechu announced that the increase is a result of President Samia’s 2024 directive, which called on public institutions to enhance accountability and efficiency in managing public resources.
Mchechu explained that the 213 institutions include commercially operated enterprises, companies in which the Government holds shares, and non-profit service-oriented institutions that contribute part of their gross revenue as dividends. However, out of all public institutions 57 had not yet submitted dividends as of June 9.
“The Treasury Registrar’s Office has collected TSh 1.028 trillion. This amount represents a 68 percent rise from last year’s figure, and it may increase further as it reflects data up to June 9 only. By the end of this month, the total may grow even more,” said Mchechu.
Twiga Minerals Corporation, a joint venture between the Government and Barrick Gold Corporation, has paid a TSh 93.6 billion dividend to the Government. The company received an award for being the top-performing entity in the category of institutions where the Government holds minority shares.
Twiga, in which the Government owns a 16 percent stake, is considered one of the outcomes of the 2017 mining laws reforms. During the ceremony, Mchechu mentioned that the Government is considering encouraging partners in the extractive sector to allow the state to hold 20 percent to 25 percent equity stakes, to increase national economic benefits.

Tanzania’s Ruling Party, CCM, Denies Sending Goons to Attack CHADEMA Rallies
Tanzania ruling party spokesperson Amos Makalla has denied any involvement of CCM in the two recent attacks on CHADEMA rallies held in Singida on June 9, 2025, and in Igunga, Tabora, on June 10, 2025.
During both meetings, some individuals appeared and started causing commotion, wielding traditional weapons and attempting to beat attendees. In both incidents, scuffles broke out, resulting in injuries among some CHADEMA members and clashes between CHADEMA members and goons.
“It’s official, CCM cannot respond to our #NoReformsNoElection arguments, so now they are planning to cause chaos at each of our rallies. I want to assure you that we will not stop our work because of cowards who are unable to respond to ideas,” Heche wrote in an X post as the Igunga scuffle happened.
CHADEMA claims that some of the people who tried to disrupt their meetings had attended National Service, are currently unemployed, and were promised future employment in exchange for their actions.
In response to CHADEMA’s accusations regarding the attacks, CCM distanced itself from any involvement, pointing to internal challenges within CHADEMA.
“Today they were in Igunga — there was a rally in Igunga, and apparently it was disrupted, as I believe you’ve seen in the media — chaos broke out there in Igunga. But without showing wisdom, their Vice Chairperson, John Heche, tweeted that the chaos at our rally was caused by youth from Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). I was very surprised,” Makalla said.
