The British High Commissioner to Tanzania, Marianne Young, and the UK Government’s Trade Envoy to East Africa, Kate Osamor MP, who is in the country on a three-day mission, visited the Dar es Salaam brewery of Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL), a British-affiliated company and subsidiary of Diageo PLC.
During the visit, the delegation engaged with brewery staff and explored opportunities to expand UK-supported enterprise development and skills training initiatives across the region. The Trade Envoy’s visit highlighted the critical role of public–private partnerships in creating long-term impact.
Speaking during the engagement, High Commissioner Young said the UK is proud to partner with businesses that champion sustainable economic growth, noting that SBL is significantly contributing to Tanzania’s prosperity.
“Serengeti Breweries Limited demonstrates how strong investment and sustainable business practices can support inclusive economic growth, from local production to climate-conscious operations and community initiatives,” said High Commissioner Young.
The visit underscores the UK’s long-term commitment to deepening economic ties with Tanzania through trade and investment. As a Diageo-owned company, SBL showcases how UK capital and expertise can drive the growth of local industries while promoting innovation, sustainability, and inclusive development.
SBL’s investments in Tanzania include empowering over 600 local farmers through its sorghum, maize, and barley sourcing programs; implementing water stewardship initiatives that have provided access to clean water for over 2 million people; and creating employment opportunities across its breweries in Moshi, Mwanza, and Dar es Salaam.
Speaking during the visit, Obinna Anyalebechi, Managing Director of SBL, welcomed the delegation and emphasized that the visit reflects the strength of UK–Tanzania relations and their shared ambition to build a more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous future.
