Dodoma. The 13th Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania was officially inaugurated today in Dodoma, marking the beginning of a new legislative term. One of the day’s key highlights was the election of the Speaker of the National Assembly, where Ilala MP Mussa Azzan Zungu (CCM) was elected to the top parliamentary position.

Zungu, who served as Deputy Speaker in the 12th Parliament, was nominated by his party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), and endorsed by its parliamentary caucus. In his acceptance remarks, Zungu emphasized cooperation with the government while upholding fairness and integrity in parliamentary proceedings.

“Parliament is not a competitor to the Government,” said Zungu. “ I pledge full cooperation with the Government, offering advice and resolutions that support the welfare of citizens and sustainable national development.”

The Speaker’s election was presided over by William Lukuvi, the long-serving Isimani MP (CCM), who clarified that he was not among the candidates for the position despite widespread rumors on social media.

“I’m here to oversee the election, though there were rumors that I was running,” Lukuvi said. “Let me make it clear — I did not contest, nor did I wish to. People talked a lot online, but my role was to preside over this election, not to seek the Speakership.”

Meanwhile, Ado Shaibu, the MP for Tunduru North, remarked that the new Parliament faces high expectations from citizens, especially after a tense and controversial election period.

“It’s too early to set expectations, but we are lending our trust to Speaker Zungu,” said Shaibu. “Outside this House, people are watching closely. Many are still grieving—some lost relatives, businesses, and even victories. Citizens want democracy, and they are watching to see if this Parliament will bring hope to Tanzanians or simply praise the Government.”

After  the swearing-in of all Members of Parliament, President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to officially inaugurate the 13th Parliament in a formal ceremony later this week.
