Former President of Malawi, Dr Lazarus Chakwera, has addressed the press on Monday, November 17, 2025, following his appointment by the Commonwealth Secretary-General as a Special Envoy to Tanzania.
“I have informed the Commonwealth Secretary General of my acceptance of the mission provided that the Tanzanian Government welcomes my engagement as a neighbour and friend who stands for the promotion of peace in this country and every country in our region,” Chakwera told members of the press.
In the announcement on Monday, the Commonwealth Secretary-General said Dr Chakwera will arrive in Tanzania for a four-day engagement from 18 to 21 November to initiate an inclusive discussion with Tanzanian stakeholders as part of efforts to address issues surrounding the elections and to support the start of a national dialogue on reconciliation and development.
In his press briefing, Chakwera highlighted how Malawi is well-positioned as an envoy for peace following a peaceful transition of power from one party to another, noting that this experience strengthens his suitability for mediation efforts.
“Accordingly, a support team of technocrats from the Commonwealth Secretariat in London arrives in Dar es Salaam today, to secure the Tanzanian government’s readiness for my proposed visit for discussions regarding the critical situation that has unfolded there and how to resolve it peacefully, given the sensitivity and difficulty of the mission,” Chakwera added.
Tanzania government has not issued any statement on the matter, but it is expected after the swear-in of the cabinet members today, November 18, 2025, members of the public will know more about the promised reconciliation drive by the government, and proposed commission of inquiry.
