Dar es Salaam – Tanzanian motorists will see a mixed adjustment in fuel prices this month, with a slight increase in petrol costs and a decrease in the prices of diesel and kerosene, according to the latest cap prices released by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) for February 2026.

Effective Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the retail price of petrol in Dar es Salaam will increase by 10 Tanzanian Shillings to Sh2,788 per litre, a rise of 0.36 per cent from January.

In contrast, the price of diesel will fall by Sh25 to Sh2,701 per litre, a 0.92 per cent decrease, while kerosene will be Sh17 cheaper at 2,746 TZS per litre, a 0.62 per cent drop.

The price adjustments reflect a combination of factors, including a significant decrease in the Free on Board (FOB) prices in the global market and a slight appreciation of the Tanzanian Shilling against the United States Dollar.

FOB prices for petrol, diesel, and kerosene decreased by 6.41 per cent, 0.50 per cent, and 1.70 per cent, respectively. However, the applicable exchange rate for February 2026 increased by 1.86 per cent.

For the ordinary Tanzanian citizen, these changes will have a varied impact. The modest decrease in diesel prices may offer some relief to the transport sector, potentially leading to lower operational costs for businesses and public transport operators.

This could, in turn, ease the burden on commuters and consumers who rely on diesel-powered transportation for the movement of goods and services.

Fuel prices vary across the country due to transportation costs. While Dar es Salaam enjoys the lowest prices, the highest are found in Kyerwa District, Kagera Region, where petrol will sell for Sh3,061 per litre.

This regional disparity means that the impact of the price changes will be felt differently across the country, with those in more remote areas continuing to pay a premium for fuel.
EWURA has reminded all retailers to adhere to the capped prices and to display them clearly at their stations. The authority also encourages consumers to verify the prices by dialling the free-of-charge USSD code 15200# and to demand receipts for all purchases.
