Dodoma – President Samia Suluhu Hassan inaugurated the new National Defence Headquarters in Kikombo, Dodoma, on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in a ceremony marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s armed forces.
The facility, which is the first permanent and unified headquarters for the Ministry of Defence and the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) since its inception in 1964, was constructed entirely by the TPDF and the National Service using government funds.
The first phase of the extensive project was completed for Sh121 billion, as confirmed by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Jacob Mkunda. The entire three-phase project is estimated to cost approximately Sh318 billion.

In her address, President Samia described the headquarters as “a symbol of maturity and a testament to our nation’s ability to plan, decide, and execute major projects using our own funds and local experts.”
She emphasised that the new facility should serve as a centre for strategic thinking and modern defence coordination, going beyond just physical infrastructure.
Reflecting on the country’s founding principles, President Samia quoted the nation’s first president, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, stating, “heart before weapons.” She stressed that the true strength of the military lies in patriotism, discipline, and integrity.
“The loyalty to the constitutional authority and faithfulness to the nation is the first weapon of a respected army,” she remarked, urging the armed forces to uphold the values of their oath.
The inauguration marks the culmination of a 48-year journey. The initial idea for a unified defence headquarters was conceived in the 1970s but was stalled by economic challenges and the Kagera War in 1978.
The project was revived and gained momentum following the government’s official relocation from Dar es Salaam to the capital city of Dodoma in 2019. The foundation stone for the complex was laid on November 25, 2019, by the late President John Magufuli.
General Mkunda highlighted the historic nature of the headquarters, noting that it brings the Ministry of Defence, National Service, and Army Headquarters under one roof for the first time, a move designed to enhance operational efficiency and coordination.

With this development, Tanzania becomes the second country in the region, after Ethiopia in 2022, to unveil such a modern, centralised defence facility.
The subsequent phases of the project will include the construction of an administrative unit, foreign relations offices, and housing for soldiers and officers.
