Police have confirmed the arrest of Frank Nyalusi, a CHADEMA party official from Iringa. The dramatic arrest, captured on CCTV and circulated on social media, showed at least three plainclothes officers arresting Nyalusi outside a shop in Iringa.
According to the police, Nyalusi was arrested for driving without a license plate and attempting to take pictures of voter registration books at various stations. Nyalusi was later released on bail.
In Katavi, police confirmed the arrest of Ms. Rhoda Kunchela, CHADEMA’s Katavi Chairperson, along with Festo Mgombele, Juma Masoud, Melkiades, Meshack Konja, and Nsajigwa John.
The police stated that they had received reports from voter registration officials that individuals attempted to cause chaos at the Songambele registration station and tried to take registration books from them.
An earlier video, circulated by CHADEMA in Katavi, showed Kunchela and her colleagues questioning registration officials about why they were registering voters on loose sheets of paper instead of in a complete book. The officials explained that the registration book was full, but Kunchela and her team believed this was a setup for fraudulent registration.
