Dar es Salaam to Receive a Makeover of Its Roads Under World Bank’s DMDP-2 Project. Four Chinese Firms to Lead Construction

Four Chinese firms, including Jiaxing Geo-Engineering, China Road and Bridge Corporation, CRJE East Africa Limited, and Group Six International Limited, have signed eight contracts for road construction in Ubungo, Kigamboni, Kinondoni, and Temeke.

Dar es Salaam is set for a major upgrade of its roads under the second phase of the World Bank-supported Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project (DMDP-2). This was announced today, October 24, 2024, during a signing ceremony between Tanzania’s President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), and the contractors.

The DMDP-2 is backed by a $385 million loan from the World Bank, covering the period from 2024 to 2030. The loan will be disbursed in stages, with the first tranche of $20 million already released this year, and the second tranche of $100 million expected next year.

Four Chinese firms, including Jiaxing Geo-Engineering, China Road and Bridge Corporation, CRJE East Africa Limited, and Group Six International Limited, have signed eight contracts for road construction in Ubungo, Kigamboni, Kinondoni, and Temeke.

Jiaxing Geo-Engineering will construct approximately 13.85 kilometers of road at a cost of Tsh 47.7 billion. This includes the Kitunda-Kivule-Msongola road (6.25 km) and Kivule-Majohe junction (2.77 km) in Kinondoni, costing Tsh 30.37 billion. The remaining roads in Ubungo—Posta Matembe (0.82 km), Sheikh Bofu (1.13 km), Segesera (0.82 km), Ubungo NHC (0.45 km), Msikitini (0.37 km), Sinza KKKT (0.27 km), and Juma Ikangaa (0.97 km)—will cost Tsh 17.36 billion.

China Road and Bridge Corporation will construct around 29.47 kilometers of road at a total cost of Tsh 66.7 billion. This includes roads in Kinondoni such as Tegeta Silva (2 km), Mivumoni (4.79 km), Binti Matola (0.77 km), Amiri Reli Tatu (0.68 km), and Togo 1, 2, and 3, covering a combined 0.92 km, for a total of Tsh 22 billion. In Kigamboni, the firm will construct roads such as Full Shangwe (1.38 km), Kigaba Plot (2.91 km), Lingia-Nyakwale (3.75 km), Gofingo-Shangwe (1.77 km), and Mizimbini (0.67 km) at a cost of Tsh 25.22 billion. In Ubungo, the Msumi road (9.83 km) will be constructed for Tsh 19.5 billion.

CRJE East Africa Limited will build  13 kilometers of road in Temeke, including Ndunguru (1.64 km), Masaki (3.91 km), Mandazi (2 km), and two pedestrian bridges, Chaurembo 1 and 2, at a total cost of Tsh 27.1 billion. Additional roads such as Songambele (0.3 km), Mwakalinga (1.7 km), Markas (0.48 km), Majimaji (0.32 km), Maghorofani (0.31 km), Igome-Yemeni (0.85 km), Keko-Machungwa (0.57 km), Basri (0.9 km), and Diwani (0.67 km) will be built for Tsh 22.92 billion.

Group Six International Limited will construct about 7.3 kilometers of road in Kigamboni at a cost of Tsh 25.56 billion. The roads to be constructed include Dege Mbutu (1.6 km), Atani Dege (1.76 km), Mchava Njama (0.7 km), Maji Posta (1.28 km), Orasa (0.89 km), Mzee Msomi (0.65 km), and Police Pikori (0.42 km).
