The owner of Tarylin Ltd, a company that owns Manyara Safari Lodge – Heritage Camp Lodge in Karatu, Arusha, broke down before reporters over a dispute with the company operating the lodge, Travel Partner Limited, citing unpaid rent and alleged threats to his life.
Favell, a British citizen, explained that the trouble began when he attempted to exercise his right of peaceful re-entry to the property following what he described as a violation of the contract.
“I have registered with TIC, and I spent a lot of money investing in Tanzania. Everything I have in the world is in this property, so for a tenant to not pay rent and somehow evict a property owner even though they have exercised their right to peaceful re-entry is just unfair; in every metric, it is unfair,” Favell told reporters.
“I’am tired of being threatened all the time, you know I can’t sleep anymore, because everytime I tried to sleep I think I can hear a car door closing, may be that it is the police coming to take me away again. I just can’t do this anymore, please help,” he said.
The dispute emerged after the termination of the contract on April 01, 2026, over unpaid rent fees. Following the dispute, the two parties were brought before the Karatu District Commissioner for a hearing, where both Favell and the owner of the company operating the lodge, Mr. Eric Mashauri, expressed differing views on the outcome of the meeting and its implications going forward. Mashauri claimed that his rights to operate the lodge had been restored, while Favell disagreed with the decision.
“First of all, he is not the owner, his shares are minority. The owner is a woman named Nashasha, who is the Tanzanian holding 51% of all the shares. Therefore, she is the one who is supposed to speak. The District Commissioner has decided that we should return here and continue running the business because his claims have no basis,”Mashauri told reporters April 30, 2026.
Mashauri further explained that Favell had booked the property as a normal guest and later locked the premises, restricting access to other guests. However, Favell said he was surprised that even after the contract was terminated due to violations, an action that also involved a public notice in a national newspaper, he was prevented from exercising his rights.
“The point that we disagree with is that we should allow the person back to the property and hand in the key again. I absolutely refuse to do that after all the threats to my life,” Favell said.
“Because once I hand the keys over, he will never give them back. So, for a tenant to not pay the rent and somehow evict the property owner, even though they have exercised their right to peaceful re-entry, is unfair,” he emphasized.
Speaking to Global TV, Favell’s wife, who is documented as holding 51% of the shares, said that their demand is for the tenant to vacate the property as stipulated in the contract.
“We do not want to continue doing business with them, but the government is forcing them to continue. When the District Commissioner adjourned the meeting, he ordered that they should go back to the building the next day, while we were told to leave,” Favell wife Sesha told Global Tv.
Speaking after the meeting on April 29, 2026, Karatu District Commissioner, Dkt. Lameck Karanga, directed that the tenants be allowed to continue serving existing bookings in order to preserve the image of the district and protect tourists’ rights.
“All guests who have made bookings should continue receiving services as they had arranged, in order to protect the reputation of the country, the region, and to ensure the district remains a safe tourism destination,” Karanga said.
“I request that, starting now, the owner of Tarylin should step aside by removing their belongings and allow the guests with bookings to continue as planned. Then, after listening to all parties, we will proceed with the appropriate legal processes to resolve the dispute among ourselves,” he continued.
He emphasized: “For now, the owner should vacate and allow the person who has been managing operations to continue running things during this period while we work toward resolving the conflict. After all the guests have been served, further steps can be taken.”
When asked on the issue of threats, the District Commissioner said they have warned Mashauri on the same.
