Dar es Salaam. President of the Republic of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, arrived in Tanzania on Monday night, June 8, 2025, for a three-day state visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
The Singaporean leader landed at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, where he was received by Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo.
On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, President Shanmugaratnam is expected to receive an official state welcome from his host, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, before holding high-level bilateral talks.
According to Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions between the two leaders will focus on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, the digital economy, port development, education, skills training, tourism, and infrastructure development.
The ministry described the visit as an important milestone in deepening diplomatic ties, trade partnerships, and investment cooperation between Tanzania and Singapore.
During the 2024/25 financial year, Tanzania recorded a trade surplus, exporting goods to Singapore worth approximately USD 137.5 million, while the total trade volume between Tanzania and Singapore reached about USD 204.7 million.
As part of the visit, President Shanmugaratnam is also expected to participate in the Tanzania-Singapore Business and Investment Forum, which aims to promote new investment opportunities and commercial partnerships between businesses from both countries.
An economist by profession, President Shanmugaratnam is also scheduled to deliver a public lecture at the University of Dar es Salaam at the News Library Auditorium, Mwalimu Nyerere Mlimani Campus.
The lecture, titled “Investing in the Drivers of Inclusive Growth,” is expected to focus on sustainable economic development and inclusive prosperity.
The Singaporean president will later travel to Zanzibar for talks with the Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi.
Officials say the visit is expected to open new avenues for economic cooperation and further strengthen the long-standing relationship between Tanzania and Singapore for the benefit of both nations.
