Dar es Salaam – Slovakia’s Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár is visiting Tanzania on June 10–11, signalling the Central European nation’s commitment to expanding its economic and diplomatic footprint in East Africa.

The visit comes as Slovakia opens a new embassy in Dar es Salaam this year, underscoring its strategic interest in the region.

Minister Blanár’s engagement with Tanzania reflects a broader European pivot toward Africa at a time when global economic partnerships are being reshaped by geopolitical tensions and climate concerns.

The visit includes bilateral talks with government officials and participation in a Tanzania-Slovakia Business Forum, aimed at unlocking trade and investment opportunities between the two nations.

The establishment of the Dar es Salaam embassy, alongside new diplomatic missions in Algeria and Ethiopia, reflects Slovakia’s strategic expansion across North and East Africa.

The timing of the visit is significant. In early June, Tanzania and Slovakia agreed to deepen bilateral trade, industrial, and investment cooperation through business-to-business exchanges.

During those discussions at Tanzania’s Ministry of Industry and Trade in Dodoma, both nations identified key sectors for collaboration, including automobile manufacturing, industrial equipment production, and broader industrial development.

The discussions highlighted Tanzania’s role as a gateway to regional markets within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC), offering Slovak businesses broader access to the African market.

Slovakia’s broader Africa strategy emphasises cooperation in areas aligned with continental priorities. The African Union’s designation of 2026 as the year of sustainable water resources has resonated with Slovakia, which has highlighted its expertise in water management and sustainable development.

The country has already implemented successful projects under the SlovakAid brand in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Gambia, focusing on water access, agriculture, and sustainable solutions for local communities.

On the multilateral front, Slovakia is actively engaging African nations as it pursues non-permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council. Minister Blanár has emphasised Slovakia’s support for reform of the UN Security Council to include stronger representation of African countries, positioning the nation as a partner committed to more inclusive global governance.

For Tanzania, the visit represents an opportunity to attract European investment and expertise in industrial development at a time when the country is pursuing economic diversification and industrialisation.

The Business Forum will provide a platform for Tanzanian entrepreneurs to explore partnerships with Slovak companies and identify investment prospects in manufacturing, industrial equipment, and technology sectors.
