Mwanza police investigate alleged murder of opposition politician
Police in Mwanza are investigating circumstances that led to the death of a member of the opposition CHADEMA Mr Erasto Makaranga with the region’s police commander Mr Ramadhani Ng’anzi telling The Citizen newspaper that detectives have already been deployed to find out what had actually happened.
Since late Sunday, reports have been circulating on social media over the alleged murder of Mr Makaranga, who was CHADEMA’s publicity secretary for Buswelu ward who had gone missing since November 7, 2021, only for his family to find the body at a mortuary at the Sekou Toure Regional Referral Hospital on November 20, 2021.
“Our officers are still at the scene collecting evidence for further investigations,” the paper quoted Ng’anzi as saying. “I urge the public to remain calm as we investigate the cause of the death and the findings will be revealed to the public.”
Family members said Monday that their plans to organize a funeral ceremony were interrupted by law enforcement officers who told them that they need the body of autopsy, which they do not know when it will be completed.
Samia commissions 118 cadet officers
President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Monday commissioned 118 cadet officers after completing their military training at the Tanzania Military Academy (TMA) in Monduli, Arusha.
The Head of State commissioned the officers through the power vested onto her under Article 148 (2) (a) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania and Section 29 (5) of the National Defence Act.
“I commission you to be officers in the Tanzania People’s Defense Forces to the position of Lieutenant from today November 22, 2021,” proclaimed the President during a function attended by Minister of Defence and National Service Dr Stergomena Tax, Chief Secretary Ambassador Hussein Katanga, and Chief of Defence Forces General Venance Mabeyo.
A total of 99 commissioned officers were men and 19 others were women.
The Commander of the Tanzania Military Academy (TMA), Brig. Gen. Mwaseba said training started on November 5, 2018, with a total of 233 trainees.
“Fifteen trainees couldn’t make it to the final due to couldn’t complete training due to different reasons including sickness, absenteeism and abandoning the session,” he said adding that the academic qualifications of the commissioned officers are bachelor degrees.
Minister: Tanzania diaspora remittances rise to $497.9 million
Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Minister Liberata Mulamula said over the weekend that according to data from the Bank of Tanzania remittances from Tanzanians in the diaspora increased from $465.7 million in 2016 to $497.9 million in 2019.
Ms Mulamula was addressing journalists in the capital Dodoma on Saturday on the Ministry’s achievements towards the country’s commemoration of the 60 years of independence.
“Tanzanians in the diaspora have been contributing on health, education and other social services, between 2015 and 2019 Tanzanians living in the UK and USA have organized five medical tours in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar” emphasized Mulamula.
Ms Mulamula said that the government in 2010 created a special department for coordinating issues related to Tanzanians in the diaspora.
“The government is continuing to put in place a conducive environment aimed at attracting Tanzanians in the diaspora to participate in the economic development of the country, including the creation of investment projects,” said Ms Mulamula.
She said that Tanzanians in the diaspora were on the frontline of promoting the use of Kiswahili, adding that the diaspora has opened Kiswahili teaching centres in China, South Africa, Egypt, Malawi, Britain, Belgium, Comoros, the Republic of Korea and France.
