Samia inaugurates Sh100billion leadership school
President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Wednesday inaugurated the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Leadership School while expressing her optimism that the college will go a long way in modernising parties that participated in the liberation struggles in Southern Africa.
The late President John Magufuli laid the foundation stone for the construction of the school in July 2018, remarking that the school should consider providing education beyond politics.
The project is funded by the Chinese government through the Communist Party of China (CPC), CCM and five southern African liberation parties, namely ANC (South Africa), Swapo (Namibia), MPLA (Angola), Zanu-PF (Zimbabwe) and Frelimo (Mozambique).
In her address on Wednesday, Samia asked representatives of the mentioned party to bring their leaders and cadres at the leadership school as the liberation movement parties are fighting to liberate their respective countries economically.
SWAPO Secretary-General Sophia Shaningwa said during the occasion that the institution of its own kind in the region will help in inculcating youth the fundamentals and principles of the Pan-Africans revolution in the history of African Independence.
“Indeed today our six sister parties are ensuring that the legacy of the liberation struggle will not only be preserved through this party school of excellence,” Ms Shaningwa said.
Mpango: We’re going to establish bank for small-scale miners
Vice President Philip Mpango said Tuesday that the government is planning to establish a bank designed for artisans and small-scale miners, in a bid to boost their investments by channelling a dedicated line of credit.
Dr Mpango revealed the plan while speaking during the 4th International Mineral and Mining Investment conference 2020, at Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam.
Mpango said the idea is to establish a financial institution that is specialised in providing loans and other funding services to groups of small-scale miners.
“While the government is working to bring in Mineral Bank, all the industry players, including banks, artisans and small-scale miners, should work hand in hand with the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) to facilitate loans for miners,” said Dr Mpango.
Mpango’s revelation followed concerns raised by groups of artisans that they are unable to get credit to expand their businesses.
Zanzibar gets new anti-drug boss
President Hussein Mwinyi has appointed Col Burhan Hassan Zuber Nassor as new Commissioner General of Zanzibar Commission for National Coordination and Drug Control.
A press statement issued by the State House on Tuesday stated that the appointment of Col Nassoro came into effect from February 22, 2022.
Last year, Dr Mwinyi promised to transform the Zanzibar Commission for National Coordination and Drug Control into a special squad capable of arresting, investigating and prosecuting drug cases.
