Dar es Salaam. Good morning! The Chanzo is here with a rundown of major news stories reported in Tanzania over the weekend. This weekend The Chanzo hosted it’s Digital Freedom and Innovation Day, a gathering that The Chanzo organised to highlight the relationship between freedom and innovation as the world celebrate World Creativity and Innovation Day . Below are some of the stories covered during the event.

What would it take to achieve an innovative Tanzania?

It was revealed on Saturday that the first step Tanzania needs to take as a nation to achieve its ambitions to become more innovative is for its people to embrace the attitude of imagining a possible new world beyond the mental and physical boundaries they are confined to.

Experts in Tanzania name media literacy as a strategy to counter disinformation ahead of elections

Information and technology experts on Saturday entrusted consumers of online media content with countering online misinformation and disinformation, noting that it was high time people stopped being passive social media users and became active agents of change.

The experts shared such a view during a discussion on digital platforms as a medium for public discourse, one of the panel discussions that occurred during Saturday Digital Freedom and Innovation Day that The Chanzo organised to highlight the relationship between freedom and innovation.

The discussion happened at a time when Tanzania is preparing for civic elections later this year and a general election slated for October 2025, and the experts fear that the democratic processes could be compromised by campaigns of misinformation and disinformation as has been documented in other contexts.

Practitioners express cautious optimism for the future of media in Tanzania

Media practitioners in Tanzania believe that the so-called fourth estate in the East African nation does have a bright future, but they express such optimism cautiously as the prospect will depend on several factors, including the quality of the content produced, the leverage on available technologies, and the conducive nature of legal and regulatory framework.

They expressed their views during a panel discussion to reflect on the future of media in Tanzania, which The Chanzo organised on Saturday as part of its Digital Freedom and Innovation Day, which the Dar es Salaam-based multimedia company organised to discuss the relationship between freedom and innovation.

The discussants, including media entrepreneurs, did not share the pessimism expressed by others that journalists might be replaced by content creators. They pointed out that people will continue to depend on journalists in their attempts to understand the world, adding that the media’s future will depend on how they treat such dependence.
