Abdul Omary Nondo, the Youth Wing Leader of the opposition party ACT Wazalendo, was released by his abductors around 11 p.m. on December 1, 2024, approximately 18 hours after his abduction at the Magufuli Bus Station in Dar es Salaam.
According to the police report, Nondo was abandoned by his abductors at Coco Beach, where he managed to seek help and was transported to the party headquarters in Magomeni. In an initial statement issued that night, ACT Wazalendo confirmed that Nondo had sustained injuries and was taken to Aga Khan Hospital for treatment.
“I believe that once he recovers, he will be able to recount the incident, which will serve as a lesson for the future on how we can address such occurrences,” said Zitto Kabwe, former party leader and a member of the ACT Wazalendo Central Committee, while speaking to reporters at the hospital.
Nondo was abducted at approximately 5 a.m. as he arrived from Kigoma. Witnesses reported that his abductors used a white Land Cruiser with the registration number T249 CMV. According to ACT Wazalendo, the license plate is registered to Deogratius Beda, but the make of the registered vehicle differs from the one involved in the incident.
Incidents of abduction have become increasingly prevalent in Tanzania. In some cases, the police have been accused of being complicit in such incidents, though these claims have been denied by the authorities.
One notable recent case involves opposition politician and youth activist Deusdedith Soka, who was abducted on August 18, 2024, along with two colleagues, Jacob Mlay and Frank Mbise. According to Soka’s family, he was lured to a police station under the pretext of retrieving his missing motorcycle but has not been seen since.
