President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, that Tanzania will nominate Dr. Mohamed Janabi for the position of WHO Regional Director for Africa.
“We have reviewed many CVs. I have received five CVs from your colleagues, but we believe your profile stands out for the WHO competition. So, we are preparing you for that. From now on, prepare yourself,” President Samia said to Dr. Janabi. The announcement came shortly after she appointed him as her health advisor on December 8, 2024.
This decision follows the passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile on November 27, 2024. Dr. Ndugulile was poised to assume the role in February 2025 following approval by the WHO Board. He had made history as the first Tanzanian and East African to win the election for the WHO Africa post.
Professor Mohamed Janabi is among Tanzania’s leading cardiologists. He previously served as the personal physician to former President Jakaya Kikwete and currently holds the position of Chief Executive Officer at Muhimbili National Hospital, the largest healthcare institution in the country.
According to the WHO Rules of Procedure for the Regional Committee for Africa, an ad hoc session is expected to be convened to nominate a new Regional Director to fill the vacancy.
