Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa Eased Out of 2025 Election Contest in Last-Minute Change of Mind

Tanzania’s Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa, has announced his decision not to run for the Ruangwa constituency seat, which he has held as a Member of Parliament for the past 15 years.

The announcement comes as a last-minute reversal from the premier, who had earlier declared on June 26, 2025, that he would seek re-election in Ruangwa.

“I acknowledge that I have often been outside our constituency serving the nation, but the people of Ruangwa have continued to support me. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you very much… I would like to inform you that I am coming to collect the nomination forms and to seek your approval,” Majaliwa said during his closing speech as head of government operations in Parliament.

In a surprising twist, news circulated on the morning of July 2, 2025, quoting CCM Ruangwa District Secretary, Abbas Makweta, who confirmed that Majaliwa had decided not to run again.

CCM Primaries: Political Heavyweights and Newcomers Jostle for 2025

Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has officially concluded the process of issuing and collecting nomination forms from aspiring candidates who seek to be endorsed by the party in the upcoming general election, scheduled for October this year.

The exercise, which began on June 28, 2025, and ended on July 2, 2025, covered various positions including parliamentary constituencies, Zanzibar House of Representatives, Special Seats for Parliament and the House of Representatives, ward councillors, as well as Special Seats for local government councils.

Among these, the most attention was drawn to the parliamentary and special parliamentary seats. While some Members of Parliament from the 12th Parliament chose not to seek re-election, several veteran politicians who had served in the third and fourth governments have made a comeback.

At the same time, a significant number of young people and women within the party were seen taking nomination forms, marking a generational shift in political engagement within CCM.

Prominent among those not seeking re-election are Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, who also serves as MP for Ruangwa; retired politician George Mkuchika, MP for Newala, who announced his retirement; Emmanuel Mageni Kasalali, MP for Sumve; and Bishop Josephat Gwajima, MP for Kawe.

PCCB Boss Chalamila Vows Zero Tolerance for Corruption in Upcoming Elections

The Director General of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB), Crispin Francis Chalamila, has issued a warning to political aspirants and those who will be nominated as candidates by political parties in the upcoming general elections to refrain from engaging in corrupt practices.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam after a workshop with various stakeholders, Chalamila also called on Tanzanians, especially voters to demonstrate patriotism and love for their country by avoiding acts of bribery.

“We are very well prepared, said Chalamila, “Follow the country’s procedures, don’t offer bribes, use acceptable forms of persuasion because we are vigilant and fully ready.”

He further stated that PCCB continues to investigate various allegations of corruption involving parliamentary and local government aspirants. Emphasizing those found guilty will face legal action.

Former Controller and Auditor General (CAG), Ludovick Utoh, who attended the PCCB workshop, also urged swift action against individuals found engaging in corruption. He stressed that this would help prevent the public from thinking that one can commit bribery without facing consequences.
