Veteran Politician and Long-Serving MP William Lukuvi Dies at 70

Tanzania mourns the loss of William Lukuvi, a prominent three-decade pillar of East African politics, who passed away from a suspected heart attack.

Dodoma – William Vangimembe Lukuvi, a veteran politician and long-serving Member of Parliament for the Ismani constituency, died on March 25, 2026, at the age of 70.

He passed away at approximately 7:00 a.m. while receiving treatment at the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma, the nation’s capital. His death was attributed to a heart attack.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced his passing, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a dedicated public servant.

She described Lukuvi as a “strong, skilled, highly experienced, patriotic leader” who served the nation with integrity, professionalism, and dedication.

At the time of his death, Lukuvi was serving as a Senior Adviser to the President for Political and Social Relations, a position he had held since June 13, 2023.

He was also the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ismani, a seat he had held continuously since November 1995.

Throughout his extensive political career, Lukuvi held several key cabinet positions within the Tanzanian government.

He served as the Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlement Development from January 24, 2015, until January 8, 2022.

Prior to that, he was the State Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office for Policy, Co-ordination and Parliamentary Affairs between November 28, 2010, and January 2015.

Lukuvi was a stalwart of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.

Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi noted that Lukuvi would be remembered as a hardworking and patriotic leader who made significant contributions to the nation, his constituency, the CCM, and its youth wing.

Minister for Agriculture Daniel Chongolo highlighted Lukuvi’s prudence and composure, qualities that enabled him to be consistently re-elected for nearly three decades.

Chongolo noted that Lukuvi served as an adviser to fellow politicians and was known for his dedication, having been at his office the day before his death despite feeling unwell.

Minister of State Paramagamba Kabudi described Lukuvi as a “treasure” within Parliament, praising his ability to mentor and guide other legislators.

Kabudi emphasised Lukuvi’s insistence on professionalism and his encouragement for leaders to work tirelessly for the national interest.

Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Hamad Hassan Chande remarked that Lukuvi played a crucial unifying role among Members of Parliament, acting as a “guiding mirror” within the legislative body.

Long tenure

Born on August 15, 1955, in Mapogoro, Tanganyika Territory, Lukuvi’s educational background included a certificate from the Tabora Teacher Training College.

He later earned a Master of Arts in Political Science from the Open University of Tanzania.

His long tenure in public office made him one of the most recognisable and experienced political figures in the East African nation. Lukuvi is survived by his widow and three children—two sons and a daughter.

His brother-in-law, Titus Kalinga, described him as a “strong pillar” for the family, likening his passing to the fall of a great baobab tree.

The government is expected to announce further details regarding funeral arrangements in due course.

His passing marks the end of an era for the Ismani constituency, which he represented for over thirty years.
