The opposition party CHADEMA has taken Tanzania’s airwaves by storm. From newspapers and radio to television and online platforms, everyone seems eager to be part of the conversation.

The tension revolves around the Vice Chairperson of the party, Tundu Lissu, one of Tanzania’s most revered opposition politicians, setting his sights on unseating Freeman Mbowe. The gloves are off, and both sides are trading punches with no mercy.

In this documentary (english subtitle included), we revisit how this political rivalry escalated from 2022. It’s a story of ambition, unfulfilled promises, and a quest for a better Tanzania. Four key issues stand out as the driving forces behind the Mbowe vs. Lissu saga—a battle that represents far more than just two individuals.

  1. CHADEMA-CCM Reconciliation and New Party Direction
There is a growing sentiment within CHADEMA that the reconciliation talks with CCM have been unproductive. Many believe the party was manipulated during these discussions, as key issues such as abductions, flawed elections, and the killing of opposition figures remain unresolved and, in some cases, have resurfaced with greater intensity.
  2. Broken Relations
The reconciliation process was shrouded in secrecy and mistrust, eroding relationships within the party. Over time, these cracks deepened, and no efforts have succeeded in repairing them.
  3. Feelings of Marginalization
Some influential members of CHADEMA who opposed the reconciliation felt sidelined this include Tundu Lissu, John Heche, Godbless Lema, and Peter Msigwa who went to CCM. They believe their political futures were predetermined, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
  4. External Influence
Allegations of financial interference by the ruling party, CCM, have further complicated matters. Claims that CCM is attempting to influence CHADEMA’s choice of its 2025 presidential candidate have fueled mistrust and intensified divisions within the party.
