Samia leaves for Scotland to attend COP26
President Samia Suluhu Hassan will today, October 30, 2021, leaves for Tanzania for Glasgow, Scotland to attend the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, a statement released yesterday by the Director of Presidential Communications Mr Jaffar Haniu stated.
The 26th United Nations Climate Change conference is scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, between October 31 and November 12, 2021, under the co-presidency of the United Kingdom and Italy. It is the biggest and most important climate-related conference on the planet.
During the 26th conference, delegates will be aiming to finalize the ‘Paris Rulebook’, or the rules needed to implement the Paris Agreement, an international treaty on climate change, adopted in 2015 that covers climate change mitigation, adaptation, and finance.
President Samia is expected to address the conference on November 2, 2021, the second day of the conference. She will also meet other heads of state, leaders of various international organizations and the business communities in order to strengthen their relationship with Tanzania, according to Mr Haniu.
On October 11, 2021, Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office (Union Affairs and Environment) Selemani Jafo told journalists in Dar es Salaam that the government had set aside Sh362 billion (about $157 million) in the 2021/2022 financial year for reducing effects of climate change, including mitigation and adaptation.
Mr Jafo said that Tanzania would submit seven agendas at the COP26, including a call for the international community to honour agreements on mitigation efforts.
He said that Tanzania will also urge the international community to encourage countries affected by climate change to protect and restore ecosystems, put warning systems in place and make infrastructure and agriculture more resilient to avoid loss of homes, livelihoods and lives.
President Mwinyi appoints new DPP
Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has on Friday appointed Ms Salma Ali Hassan as a new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of the semi-autonomous archipelago off the Indian Ocean, according to a statement released yesterday by Zanzibar’s Chief of Secretary Engineer Zena Said.
Ms Said stated that the Head of State also appointed Mwanamkaa Abdulrahman Mohammed as Ms Hassan’s deputy. President Mwinyo also appointed Muumin Khamis Kombo as a Judge of the Isles’s High Court.
The appointment of the three appointees is effective from yesterday, October 29, 2021. Dr Mwinyi is expected to swear in the newly appointed officials today, October 30, 2021.

The hearing on the terrorism case against CHADEMA national chairperson Mr Freeman Mbowe and his three others continued on Friday whereby the third prosecution witness Corporal Hafidh Abdallah Mohamed was cross-examined by both prosecution and defence counsels.
