Dar es Salaam. Good morning! The Chanzo is here with a rundown of major news stories reported in Tanzania on Tuesday, February 1, 2022.

Tulia Ackson becomes Tanzania’s second female Speaker of Parliament

Members of Parliament on Tuesday elected Dr Tulia Ackson as Speaker of the National Assembly, filling a vacant position left by Job Ndugai who resigned on January 6, 2022.

She becomes the second woman to lead the legislative body after Ms Anne Makinda who became the first woman in Tanzania to lead it.

Dr Tulia garnered all 376 of the valid polls cast and defeated eight other contestants who were eyeing for the top post.

Other contestants in the race included Abdallah Mohammed Said (NRA), Saadun Abrahaman Hatib (DP), Ndonge Said Ndonge (AFP) and Engineer Ivan Maganza  (TLP).

Others were David Mwaijojele (CCK), Georges Busungu (TADEA), Kunje Ngombalemwelu (SAU) and Maimuna Said Kassim (ADC).

Former BBC journalist Zuhura Yunus appointed as new presidential communications director

President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Tuesday announced her appointment of former BBC journalist Zuhura Yunus as the new head of presidential communications at the State House, replacing Jaffar Haniu who will be assigned another role.

According to a statement released yesterday, Yunus’s appointment was effective on January 30, 2022.

The author of the recently-published Biubwa Amour Zahor: Mwanamke Mwanamapinduzi becomes the first woman to hold the post.
