The election marks a significant political comeback for the 85-year-old Mutharika, who defeated incumbent Lazarus Chakwera with a decisive 57 per cent of the vote.

Since 2019, over 200 people, including opposition members and critics, have disappeared in Tanzania in what UN experts call a systematic campaign of repression ahead of the October elections.

The warning comes amid growing concerns about the credibility of an election where major opposition candidates have been excluded from the race.
