Radio presenter Gardner G Habash laid to rest in Kikelelwa Rombo

Radio presenter Gardner G. Habash was laid to rest yesterday in his hometown of Kikelelwa, in Rombo, Kilimanjaro. Hundreds of mourners, led by his family and colleagues from Clouds FM, the media station where he began his career and where he served until his passing, gathered to pay their final respects.

Gardner, affectionately known as “Captain,” is hailed as one of the pioneering figures who inspired a generation of radio presenters, particularly those specializing in entertainment.

He passed away on the night of April 20, 2024, at the age of 50, before that he had communicated to the public that he was bedridden due to heart issues.

Gardner was the beloved host of the popular evening show “Jahazi,” renowned for its blend of entertainment and engaging dialogue, reflecting on the day’s events.

Zanzibar government received 91.4 billion as its share in the union govt proceedings for FY 2023/24

The government of Zanzibar has received a total of Tshs. 91.4 billion by the end of March 2024 for the financial year 2023/24. This was revealed yesterday in parliament by the Minister of State (Union and Environment), Dr Selemani Jafo during the tabling of the ministry budget.

The amount includes Tshs. 72,965,660,398 as a share of loans and grants received, Tshs. 4.5 billion as the Bank of Tanzania dividends and 14 billion, pay-as-you-earn taxes from Zanzibar employees operating in Tanzania.

This revelation comes three days before the commemoration of Union Day on April 26, 2024, an important date to mark the celebration of the 60 years of the union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar forming Tanzania.

According to the ministry, about 22 union complaints were resolved between 2010 and now, leaving only 4 issues that need to be resolved. Dividends from the Bank of Tanzania is one of the issues that the opposition party in Zanzibar and activists have been calling for the government to implement.

Several local governments earned USD 12 million in carbon credit sales

Several local governments have earned USD 12.6 million from carbon credit sales. This was revealed yesterday in parliament by the Minister of State (Union and Environment), Dr Selemani Jafo during the tabling of the ministry budget.

The earnings stems from 24 projects registered in the country.  Tanzania’s government has set an ambitious target of raising about USD 1 Billion through carbon trading. The government has also reported to have completed the review of the carbon trading regulations of 2022 and that they will be replaced with the new regulations of 2023.

One of the major players in the carbon trading business in Tanzania is Carbon Tanzania, in Dec 2023 government signed a deal that will see the company have projects in six national parks, spanning 1.8 million hectares. The national parks include Burigi-Chato, Katavi Plains, Ugalla River, Mkomazi, Gombe Stream, and Mahale Mountains.

In February 2023, the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) an agency that manages over 15 million hectares of forest land signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Dubai-based company, Blue Carbon, which committed to invest over US$450 million in the African carbon markets.

The partnership targets eight million hectares of forest in the first phase, including 56,000 hectares of mangroves for carbon markets.

  1. An excellent initiative! Congradulations! When will Kagera region which is growing pines, ecariptus, bananas etc benefit from this initiatives? It is not clear what types of plants are worthy planting as Kagera has forests of different types.
