CHADEMA launches ‘tone tone’ campaign to boost citizen funding for local politics

CHADEMA has launched the Tone Tone (Drop by Drop) campaign on Thursday, February 27, 2025 to enhance public funding of local politicking. The campaign which was launched just before midnight has quickly gained momentum, attracting massive public participation on social media. The party has integrated digital platforms across multiple payment systems, including mobile money and social media, to facilitate contributions.

“The essence of this campaign is that a single drop may seem insignificant, but when collected together, it forms rain, rivers, and oceans,” said the party’s Deputy Secretary-General, Amani Golugwa.

Reinforcing this message, CHADEMA Secretary-General John Mnyika highlighted the party’s steady growth since 1995 when it secured only four parliamentary seats. By 2015, the party had gained 72 MPs, 1,104 councilors, and control of 20 councils before what he described as electoral disruptions in 2020.

“This party has grown consistently since 1995. Join us in this ocean of change to bring justice to our nation,” Mnyika urged.

Govt’s Chief Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa defends Samia’s record on democracy, economy

The government’s Chief Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, has said that Tanzanians have a “thousand reasons” to vote for President Samia Suluhu Hassan in the general elections later this year, defending her record of improving pluralistic politics, the national economy, and people’s welfare.

Mr Msigwa, who doubles as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, defended the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi’s (CCM) presidential nominee in the upcoming election during a wide-ranging interview with The Chanzo to talk about trust in the government as well as clarifying on some topical national issues.

Msigwa, a former journalist, said that President Samia laid out her political philosophy as well as her vision for Tanzania in the much-vaunted 4Rs, namely reconciliation, resilience, reforms, and rebuilding, areas which the Director General of Tanzania Information Services (MAELEZO) thinks the Head of State has “excelled beyond expectations.”

ACT-Wazalendo calls on Z’bar’s govt to terminate contract with investor at Malindi’s Port over ‘dismal failures’

Opposition ACT-Wazalendo party on Thursday called on the Zanzibari government to terminate its contract with the operator of the Malindi port in the semi-autonomous archipelago, the Zanzibar Multipurpose Terminal, noting that the company has “dismally failed” at improving services at the deep-sea port on the west coast of Zanzibar.

During a press conference at the party’s headquarters at Vuga, Unguja, ACT-Wazalendo deputy national chairperson (Zanzibar) Ismail Jussa said that services at the port have been slowing since the government replaced the Zanzibar Ports Corporation with the Zanzibar Multipurpose Terminal as the principal operator of the Malindi port.

Tanzania’s prosecutors end almost two month-incarceration of govt critic Willibrod Slaa as they drop ‘false information’ charges against him

Government prosecutors said Thursday that they no longer have interest in pursuing the “false information” charges they had earlier levelled against veteran Tanzanian politician Wilbrod Slaa, ending his 48-day detention at the Keko Prison in the city he was serving after he was denied bail.

Slaa, who once served as the Tanzanian ambassador to Sweden, was arrested on January 10, 2025, and charged with publishing “false information” via the social media platform X. His arrest followed his remarks during an X Space organised by human rights activist Maria Sarungi-Tsehai.

During the conversation, Dr Slaa, who once served as the secretary-general of the opposition CHADEMA, claimed that he had been informed about President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s conversation with former CHADEMA national chairperson Freeman Mbowe to influence the election within Tanzania’s main opposition party.
